If you travel over the Alpine Way, from Albury across to Cooma and then to Canberra you pass through Thredbo, which is the Australian resort with most vertical. You also pass close to Perisher Blue (via the Skitube) which is the largest resort by area. The Alpine Way is a spectacular drive. You should be awatre that you are required to carry snow chains in winter, and that the road is occasionally closed after a snowfall, so keep an eye on road conditions.

Hotham and Falls Creek both involve a diversion (and the roads are dodgy). 2.5 hours for Falls Creek to Canberra is ridiculous. 5 hours is more like it. Thredbo is about 6 hours from Melbourne, and Canberra is about 2.5 hours from Thredbo.
