Is it true it only takes 2 and a half hours to get to Amsterdam from Hamburg by

OK so I am staying in Hamburg for a couple of days with 2 friends and one of them has a cousin that lives there that says we can go to Amsterdam without staying the night by going first thing in the morning and take the latest train back because it only takes 2 and a half hours. The cousin that lives there said she's gone to Amsterdam from Hamburg, Germany in a train in 2 and a half hours. Is this possible? The two places are soo far apart. I read on the internet it takes 5-6 hours one way, and there are no direct trains. Is there some new crazy high speed train between the two? Or is she incorrect.
