If you are only going to be Rome for 2 days (and you wanted to tour Rome) you won't need a guide - a map will do. I recommend one that has a map of the metro. A guide would be useful at the Vatican as they are sometimes privileged so they don't have to wait in the queue.
If you know what hotel you are staying at the concierge can connect you with tours that go to neighboring areas: Ostia Antica, Sorrento, Assisi, etc. I was able to contact the concierge at the Hilton but not at the Italian hotels I've stayed at though.
