Your thoughts on traveling to Mexico for spring break?

I want to go to Mexico for spring break, but I'm wondering if that's a bad idea due to how dangerous it is right now in Mexico. I want to go to a town next to the beach and near to California. So, is this a bad idea? Should I go? Or make different plans? Any specific places to recommend? Thanks!
