A few years ago I went to Cranbrook, BC for an orienteering
competition. I stayed at the Purcell House, one of the residence
halls for the College of the Rockies. Cranbrook is in the Kootenay
Valley in southeast BC, at the western foot of the Rockies.
I'm not sure how you would get there from a major airport, but
they might have air service. I drove up from Spokane.
It looked like it might be a nice area for what you want.
For inexpensive accomodations, the Canada branch of Hostelling
International is at www.hihostels.ca.
