what happen to these flights to portugal/spain people say thay got for like a quid?

im trying to grab a quick break away within the next month but getting silly quotes back from so called 'cheap' charter flights. Anybody got a good website to look at or idea's how to get a REALLY cheap getaway?
Ive heard people say just stand around the airport and wait for a cancelled flight but i need to know that everything is in place before i leave home rather than do it on a whim!

try easy jet or ryan air
there is no such thing as stand by at the airports anymore unless you already have a ticket to "standby" for an earlier or later flight
