Thinking of doing a little road trip this summer any tips?

I knew a friend back in high school who was going to do this trip where he'd just get in car and just keep driving until he needed to sleep and then do it again the next day. Planning to see things and meet people along his way. Now I don't know if he ever went out and did it but it kind of sounds cool to me.

Hitting the road with no real direction and just seeing what happens.

Though for experienced road trippers what kind of tips can you give me for this?

I'm planning to go by myself since, well, my friends don't really know how to have fun on these kinds of trips and I don't feel like babysitting them.
