Does anyone have experience driving from LA to Vegas over Labor Day?

We are leaving on Thursday night and coming back Sunday night. By doing this, should we avoid the worst of the traffic? Also, we are driving with our seven month old daughter- is this a dangerous drive, or should it be no more dangerous than any other interstate?
